Steven D. Hickman, Psy.D.
Director
Dr. Hickman is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and an
Assistant Clinical Professor in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. Working
within the Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Service at the UCSD
Medical Center and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, Dr. Hickman is engaged in a variety of activities, primarily
focused on the psychological care of people facing medical illness. Much
of his clinical work centers around the assessment and treatment of patients
with chronic pain, cancer and other medical conditions.
Beginning with a small research grant when he was still
a Post-Doctoral Fellow at UCSD in 2000, Dr. Hickman has developed and
pursued his passion for the practice and application of mindfulness in
the care of patients. This interest has two aspects: mindfulness as a
practice to be taught to patients and mindfulness as a central component
of psychological and medical treatment. Thus, the Center for Mindfulness
(as envisioned by Dr. Hickman), has as its purpose, both the fostering
of mindfulness-based interventions for patient care, and professional
training and development for psychotherapists, physicians and other healthcare
providers.
